the american history research association of china (ahrac) was founded in 1979. it is a nationwide, non-profit academic organization composed of chinese scholars of american history. the organization is legally registered through the ministry of domestic affairs of the people’s republic of china. the current president of ahrac is professor li jianming of nankai university and professor wang xu of xiamen university is the current secretary-general and vice president.

the ahrac provides liaison among chinese scholars of american history, promotes teaching and research of american history, enhances american and sino-american academic cooperation, and develops friendships between chinese and american people.

the members of the association come from colleges and universities, research institutions, and publishing houses throughout china. the present membership exceeds 600, over half of the members have academic titles of associate professor or above.

the ahrac has held ten annual meetings and supported many academic programs and activities between chinese scholars and scholars from the united states, england, hong kong and other areas. it has also helped to carry out collaborative research projects, including the american history series, translations on american history as well as providing consulting services for chinese and overseas enterprises.

the ahrac publishes the china journal of american history (formerly newsletter of ahrac). this journal carries a variety of articles, book reviews, ph.d. dissertation and m.a. thesis abstracts as well as information of academic activities. currently 89 issues have been published.

the leading body of the ahrac is its elected board of directors. the board is composed of the president, vice-presidents, secretary-general, deputy-secretaries-general. the secretariat runs daily routines (from 1979 to 2002 the secretariat was located in the department of history of wuhan university and the institute of history of nankai university and was transferred to the institute of american history of xiamen university in 2003 ). the ahrac has invited mr. huang hua, former vice-premier and foreign minister, and senior specialist of american affairs, as its honorary president for the ahrac, and number of noted chinese scholars of american history also serve as advisors.

the american history research association of china endeavors to develop and enhance china’s understanding of american history. it is looking forward to further cooperation and exchanges with colleagues and friends both at home and abroad.
